Since the publication of the first edition in 2005, The Plain And Simple Guide to Music Publishing has emerged as the premier guide to the subject. With sufficient depth to be used as a text at major college music industry programs including UCLA, NYU and Northeastern, the book also remains simple and clear enough for the lay songwriter to gain a crucial understanding of musical copyrights and licensing basics. To wit, the second edition garnered 33 customer reviews on Amazon.com, with a rating of 4.8 out of 5 possible stars. In this expanded and updated third edition, with a forward by Tom Petty, the author adds greater depth to such increasingly important topics as the rapidly shifting industry paradigms, the growing importance of streaming and subscription models, a discussion of new compulsory license media, the impact of copyright terminations and reversions, updated advice on current license prices, as well as all the basics of copyright and rights management.

The Word Rhythm Dictionary: A Resource for Writers, Rappers, Poets, and Lyricists
Timothy Polashek (Author)

New!: $65.00 $58.50 (as of 03/28/2014 19:42 PST)

Music

The Word Rhythm Dictionary: A Resource for Writers, Rappers, Poets, and Lyricists is a new kind of dictionary—one that reflects the use of “rhythm rhymes” by rappers, poets, and songwriters of today. This is an eminently practical reference work for all wordsmiths looking to add musicality to their writing. Users of this dictionary can alphabetically look up words in the General Index to find collections of words that have the same rhythm as the original word and are readily useable in ways that are familiar to us in everything from vers libre poetry to the lyrics and music of Bob Dylan and hip hop groups.

Professional writers and students have long used traditional rhyming dictionaries for inspiration by perusing lists of rhyming words; they may ask themselves, “I need a word that rhymes with blue,” and are led to shoe, flu, or you. These rhyming words evoke through juxtaposition new images, thoughts, and actions that inspire creative directions and pleasing twists as verses and stanzas unfold. For the first time ever, this dictionary now allows writers and poets to ask the same question, but of word rhythm— “I need a word with the same rhythm as butterfly. . . . ” Today’s lyricists and poets know that there is so much more to the flow of their creations than just matching vowels.

The Word Rhythm Dictionary organizes words by additional properties: phonetic similarity (alliteration and literary consonance), the number of syllables in words, and syllable stress patterns. Never has it been easier to locate words that feature similar sounds, matching meters, and rhythmic grooves, from traditional rhymes like “clashing” and “splashing,” to near rhymes like “rollover” and “bulldozer,” “unrefuted undisputed” to pure metrical matches, like “biology” and “photography.” Additional appendices allow readers to search according to poetic metrical feet and musical rhythm through a visual index of notated rhythms, allowing musicians and lyricists to track down words that match preexisting motives and melodies. This book could become the new fun addiction (or… addiction affliction…constriction conviction…conniption prescription…subscription conscription) for writers, musicians, lyricists, rappers, poets, and wordsmiths alike. Oh, and it’s a lot of fun just to browse!!

String players face a bewildering array of terms related to their instruments. Because string playing is a living art form, passed directly from master to student, the words used to convey complex concepts such as bow techniques and fingering systems have developed into an extensive vocabulary that can be complicated, vague, and even contradictory. Many of these terms are derived from French, Italian, or German, yet few appear in any standard music dictionary. Moreover, the gulf separating classical playing from fiddle, bluegrass, jazz, and other genres has generated style-specific terms rarely codified into any reference work. All Things Strings: An Illustrated Dictionary bridges this gap, serving as the only comprehensive resource for the terminology used by the modern string family of instruments. All of the terms pertaining to violin, viola, cello, and double bass, inclusive of all genres and playing styles, are defined, explained, and illustrated in a single text.

Entries include techniques from shifting to fingerboard mapping to thumb position; the entire gamut of bowstrokes; terms found in orchestral parts; instrument structure and repair; accessories and equipment; ornaments (including those used in jazz and bluegrass); explanations of various bow holds; conventions of orchestral playing; and types of strings, as well as information on a select number of famous luthiers, influential pedagogues, and legendary performers.
All Thing Strings is expertly illustrated with original drawings by T. M. Larsen and musical examples from the standard literature. Appendixes include an extensive bibliography of recommended reading for string players and a detailed chart of bowstrokes showing notation and explaining execution.

As the single best source for understanding string instruments and referencing all necessary terminology,
All Things Strings is an essential tool for performers, private teachers, college professors, and students at all levels. It is also an invaluable addition to the libraries of orchestra directors and composers wishing to better understand the complexities of string playing. With the inclusion of terms relevant to all four modern string instruments played in all genres—from jazz to bluegrass to historically informed performance—this resource serves the needs of every string musician.

Music

As a Music instructor, I have found that many students are not taught Music Theory until much later in their studies. It is not until the student has advanced that he or she learns what some of the symbols in Music mean and as important, how they coordinate and relate to one another and to the instruments that the student is trying to learn.

In various teaching methods that I have seen, the student is confronted with a page of symbols that he sees for the first time and has no idea what they are. The teacher then plays the piece for him and he is supposed to figure out the meaning of all the symbols in the piece just by hearing it played. This is akin to learning how to read by having someone read a sentence to you and expecting you to understand all of it despite never having seen or heard of the Alphabet.

A student learns to read by taking each of the individual symbols of the alphabet and learning exactly what they stand for. He then learns how to put the symbols together in a way that makes sense. Once he does that, he learns all of the symbols of punctuation and how they relate to the words.

In short, there is a lot of time in the child's early years, spent learning the individual symbols for reading and writing. At that point, he learns the rules and principles that govern writing. This takes years.

On the other hand, most Music methods barely touch on Music Theory which includes the definitions of the words and symbols, how they relate to one another, and the basic rules that you follow to ensure that the music is comprehensible. Music notation (the written communication of Music), and Music itself is a system of communication. If you know and can use the rules of this method of communication, you will succeed in Music. If you do not, you will never get past a certain point in your training and you will always have a bit of confusion on how to play what you see on the printed page.

For this reason I have created this book.

This book is meant to be a primer, in other words, it is an introduction to the basic words and symbols you first come across in the subject of Music.

After reading and understanding this volume, you should approach your child's further studies in the same way. Look up the definitions of the symbols. Coordinate them in your mind and ensure that your child can do the same so that you both understand their usage.
Developing good study habits and ensuring that you understand every concept will ensure that you receive a depth of knowledge in the subject of Music that will allow both you and your child to do whatever you want with it. The sky is the limit once you know the principles and the rules.

Fanfares and Finesse: A Performer's Guide to Trumpet History and Literature
Elisa Koehler (Author)

Download: $27.99 (as of 03/21/2014 18:11 PST)

Music

Unlike the violin, which has flourished largely unchanged for close to four centuries, the trumpet has endured numerous changes in design and social status from the battlefield to the bandstand and ultimately to the concert hall. This colorful past is reflected in the arsenal of instruments a classical trumpeter employs during a performance, sometimes using no fewer than five in different keys and configurations to accurately reproduce music from the past. With the rise in historically inspired performances comes the necessity for trumpeters to know more about their instrument's heritage, its repertoire, and different performance practices for old music on new and period-specific instruments. More than just a history of the trumpet, this essential reference book is a comprehensive guide for musicians who bring that musical history to life.

Music

More than any other musician, Herbie Mann was responsible for establishing the flute as an accepted jazz instrument. Prior to his arrival, the flute was a secondary instrument for saxophonists, but Mann found a unique voice for the flute, presenting it in different musical contexts, beginning with Afro-Cuban, and then continuing with music from Brazil, the Middle East, the Caribbean, Japan, and Eastern Europe. As Mann once said, People would say to me, I dont know where you are right now, and I would respond, And youre not going to know where Im going to be tomorrow. A self-described restless spirit, Herbie Mann also was a master at marketing himself. His insatiable curiosity about the world led him to experiment with different kinds of sounds, becoming a virtual Pied Piper of jazz. He attracted to thousands to his concerts while alienating purists and critics alike. His career lasted for five decades, from his beginnings in a tiny Brooklyn nightclub to appearances on international stages. I want to be as synonymous with the flute as Benny Goodman is for the clarinet, he was fond of saying. By the time he died of prostate cancer in 2003, he had fulfilled his desire.

Dozens of guitars are pictured inside along with players, ads, catalogs, and rare memorabilia. A detailed reference section helps musicians and collectors identify and date PRS instruments, making this revised and updated edition of The PRS Electric Guitar Book a must for all guitar fans.

At a time when listeners increasingly download or upload songs, creating personal playlists on MP3 players and I-Pods, the art of packaging music seems to be fading away. But, for more than 50 years, musicians have released their work inside brilliantly-designed packages that made an important statement about their music and style. Look at the cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart Band, for exampleAjust one of the 500 memorable images in this amazing collection, all chosen by a panel of 50 experts and each accompanied by enlightening commentary. Among the choices: the brilliantly psychedelic and way-out art from the Rolling Stones’ Their Satanic Majesties Request; Peter Tosh’s fiery cover for Bush Doctor; and the somewhat demented-looking prom queen on Hole’s Live Through This album. From rock to pop, jazz to blues, these are all artistically, stylistically, and culturally significant in their own way, and will undoubtedly spark a debate with fans around the world.

Eric Clapton: His Life and Music
Marc Roberty (Author)

New!: $27.99 $21.80 (as of 03/10/2014 12:10 PST)

Music

Eric Clapton: His Life and Music tells the story a man who is arguably the worlds greatest guitar player. Written by Clapton expert Marc Roberty, author of the incredibly detailed two-volume music chronicle Eric Clapton, Day by Day (Backbeat Books), this book covers the entirety of Claptons impressively long career (the artist celebrated his fiftieth year in music in 2013). Claptons own autobiography was light on music, concentrating more on the hardships in his life and how he overcame them, but Robertys biography goes beyond that, with special emphasis on Claptons music, making this biography a critical companion to Claptons own book. Roberty starts with Claptons early days in the Roosters and moves on to the artists years with the Yardbirds through to John Mayalls Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominos, and a highly successful solo career that is still going strong. The volume looks in-depth at his relationships with band members and why he left them all to pursue a solo career and includes details about all of Claptons major musical endeavors.

Finally... here is the first and only book that visually tells us the intimate story of Peter, Paul, and Mary and their music, with stirring images that follow their passionate, fifty-year journey to the center of America's heart. The very best of thousands of photographs, many rare and never before published, taken over five decades by some of the world's top photographers, follow them from their earliest performances in the 1960s, when Mary was the most desired, beautiful, and charismatic performer and a new role model for women. Follow the trio as they lead America to discover the passionate sound of folk music. Join the struggle for racial equality, social justice, and freedom in this memorable journey, from the historic 1963 March on Washington with Martin Luther King, Jr., to the trio's appearance before a half million people in 1969 to end the Vietnam War, to their singing at the Hollywood Bowl for Survival Sunday in 1978, helping to launch the antinuke movement, the world's first international environmental movement.
Through these images, you can feel and almost hear the trio's songs calling for a more caring, better world as you see them performing with a courage and conviction that became for so many the embodiment and sound track of their generation's awakening to conscience, to activism, and to a new dream for all of humankind. Peter, Paul, and Mary's songs of defiant hope and a certain unmasked innocence are still a pwerful part of our American consciousness, and this book reenacts the history of how the trio marked our lives with their indelible stamp of honesty of the sort we yearn to recapture and recreate in our own time--for ourselves, our children, and the generations to come.
