Moveable guitar chord shapes based on the CAGED guitar system. Rather than presenting the same shapes as different chords when moved up or down the fret-board, Chords for Guitar is a reference of over 200 unique shapes for more chord types (just over 60) from the commonly used chords such as major, minor, sus2, sus4, add9 and 7th chords to further extended chords, altered chords and inversions, enabling you to find many more chords yourself and get a better understanding of the fret-board. The root note location within all of the guitar chords is clearly marked out enabling you to transpose its moveable shape up and down the fret-board. Each chord type has a question to make sure you're on track to being able to locate guitar chords yourself; shift the root note to its note name location (e.g. C, F#, G etc.) apply the chord shape, then check the answer at the back. Theory and chord construction are explained using piano keys for the simplicity of its linear layout of notes, then applied to the six-string guitar, from the basics of using odd numbered intervals (e.g. 1, 3, 5 etc.) to the compound intervals within extended chords and alterations.

Steal Away the Night: An Ozzy Osbourne Day-by-Day
Martin Popoff (Author)

New!: $39.99 $29.99 (as of 05/22/2014 10:11 PST)

Music

Steal Away the Night: An Ozzy Osbourne Day-by-Day aims to add to the shockingly slight representation of all things Oz-man in book form with celebrated metal expert Martin Popoff plotting the crazy 30-plus-year run of rocks most adorable madman, day by day, milestone after milestone, the hirings, the firings, the rehabs and relapses, the bats, the doves, Zakk Wylde, and most seriously, the tragic death of Randy Rhoads in a fly-by prank gone wrong. Adding to the considerable textual substance of the tome (which promises to leave no Oz-related scrap of trivia unearthed) is a running oral history of the band, making use of Popoffs extensive interview material with Ozzy plus various band members and producers (along with press quotes), augmented by an explosion of garish imagery culled from the bands record sleeves, live shows, ads, and memorabilia. Indeed, Ozzys shock-rock visuals are some of the flashiest in the biz, making each page of Steal Away the Night: An Ozzy Osbourne Day-by-Day explode with heavy metal power.

Oasis: Definitely Maybe: Here We Are But There We Were
Andy Reilly (Author)

Download: $3.31 (as of 05/21/2014 11:15 PST)

Music

In the rush to commemorate anniversaries and the forgotten days of our youth, it seems that everything and anything is worthy of recall and acknowledgement. Twenty years on from 1994, there are a range of moments that people can remember as if they took place yesterday. Roberto Baggio’s penalty kick may still be in orbit while Loaded magazine has long since bitten the dust but one thing stands out bigger and stronger than the rest of the memories of the years combined.

1994 was the year Oasis burst into public view and their debut album ‘Definitely Maybe’ is still lauded as one of the greatest debut albums, and indeed guitar albums, of all time. The stories of the battling brothers from Burnage in Manchester may have grabbed the headlines but it was the songs and tunes that grabbed the hearts and minds of the fans who followed on behind the Gallaghers and the rest of the group.

Andy Reilly was just one the millions who were swept up in the crescendo of Oasis becoming the biggest band in Britain. This book is the story of where we were at the start of the ride that would take on us further ups and downs either side of the millennium. The Oasis story was a long one, and one that may not have reached its natural conclusion, but 1994 was the year that it all started coming together as they grabbed hold of new followers on a daily basis.

1993 saw unemployment figures in the UK crash through the 3 million barrier and many were of the opinion that it wasn’t worth the aggravation to find a job when there was nothing worth working for. Going into 1994, things weren't looking any brighter in the UK.

The UK chart music scene was as soul-destroying as the job market. The book looks at how Oasis found themselves in the right place at the right time, exactly who they were railing against, and what the band meant to their adoring public. In the story of Oasis, 1994 deserves to be told in its own right.

We love the speed and community of the internet, but there's so much noise(and far too few filters) that important stories can get lost. We work hard on what we publish day-to-day, and put so much of ourselves into the features we run on Pitchfork.com, that we want to give pieces a second life, one that won't be lost to Google searches and Twitter archives. This publication features contributions by some of today's finest writers, illustrators, and photographers. Their work should be studied, considered, and enjoyed, not deleted. Their subject, in the pages of The Pitchfork Review, is music culture.

Rikky Rooksby (Author)

Music

This guidebook teaches songwriters exactly how to create awesome solos that will really help their material stand out. Based on the study of nearly 900 songs from six decades of great music, it explains the musical role played by solos, illustrates which notes work over any chord sequence, and offers a comprehensive range of hints and tips for creating instrumental breaks that will enhance any song. An accompanying CD includes no fewer than 42 sample solos in a range of styles and moods. Separate backing tracks are a provided for the reader to work with and play over. For songwriting guitarists, the book goes beyond mere instrumental technique to demonstrate how lead guitar can be made to serve a song rather than simply decorating it. It also explores the wide range of other instruments that can be used to create really stunning solos.

The musical adventure of a lifetime. The most exciting book on music in years. A book of treasure, a book of discovery, a book to open your ears to new worlds of pleasure. Doing for music what Patricia Schultz—author of the phenomenal 1,000 Places to See Before You Die—does for travel, Tom Moon recommends 1,000 recordings guaranteed to give listeners the joy, the mystery, the revelation, the sheer fun of great music.

This is a book both broad and deep, drawing from the diverse worlds of classical, jazz, rock, pop, blues, country, folk, musicals, hip-hop, world, opera, soundtracks, and more. It's arranged alphabetically by artist to create the kind of unexpected juxtapositions that break down genre bias and broaden listeners’ horizons— it makes every listener a seeker, actively pursuing new artists and new sounds, and reconfirming the greatness of the classics. Flanking J. S. Bach and his six entries, for example, are the little-known R&B singer Baby Huey and the '80s Rastafarian hard-core punk band Bad Brains. Farther down the list: The Band, Samuel Barber, Cecelia Bartoli, Count Basie, and Afropop star Waldemer Bastos.

Each entry is passionately written, with expert listening notes, fascinating anecdotes, and the occasional perfect quote—"Your collection could be filled with nothing but music from Ray Charles," said Tom Waits, "and you'd have a completely balanced diet." Every entry identifies key tracks, additional works by the artist, and where to go next. And in the back, indexes and playlists for different moods and occasions.

(Book). "My dad and I decided to make an electric guitar. I designed an instrument from scratch, with the intention that it would have a capability beyond anything that was out there, more tunable, with a greater range of pitches and sounds, with a better tremolo, and with a capability of feeding back through the air in a 'good' way'." Brian May and his father Harold started to hand-build an electric guitar in 1963. Brian dreamed of a guitar that would outperform any of the existing commercially made electric guitars; his father had the technical knowledge and skills to help make the dream come true. Brian played his guitar on every Queen album and in all of Queen's live shows around the world. In this book you will discover everything you ever wished to know about Brian's unique instrument. Brian talks about every aspect of the Red Special, from its birth to playing on the roof of Buckingham Palace, from Live Aid to the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics and beyond. All of this is accompanied with original diagrams, sketches and notes dating from the building of the guitar, as well as a great selection of photographs including Brian on stage with his guitar, close-ups and x-rays. Additional selling points: * Includes rare and previously unseen photographs of the Red Special, Brian and his father, and Queen. * The guitar has been fully dismantled and every piece is photographed.

Music

The Nice were Keith Emerson's band prior to superstardom in Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Formed as a backing band for soul singer PP Arnold, The Nice laid the foundations for what would become progressive rock. Their debut album mixed rock with jazz and classical music, and their hard rock reinvention of Leonard Bernstein's 'America' propelled them into the US and UK charts, influencing their biggest fan, Jimi Hendrix, to reinterpret 'The Star Spangled Banner'. 'The Story of The Nice: Hang on to a Dream', first published in 2002 and now fully revised and updated, chronicles the history of the band. Drawing on interviews with band members and their associates, together with archive sources, it is a fascinating tale of musical ambition, engagingly told with a keen eye for period detail.
